FLOOD DEFENCES IN THE HAPPING AREA

The Stalham and Happing Partnership have issued a statement and petition about the Flood Denfences in the Happing area. The statement and petition will be sent to Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk at the end of May.  Details of the petition can be found on their website: www.happing.co.uk

The statement says:

The people of the Happing Area demand:-

1  That the Environment Agency and Government honour their public pledge to "hold the line" of sea defences for the next 50 years.

2 That in order to restore public and business confidence the "Option 4" proposals by the organisation known as English Nature be clearly and publicly rejected as an option fo the Happisburgh to Winterton coastline.

3  That current sea denences be eamined in detail to ensure that they are made "fit for purpose" to cope with an inundation of 1938 or 1953 proportions.

4  That plans be drawn up to extend the level of edfences to take into account any further anticipated sea level rise including the construction of fish-tail groynes and further off-shore reef systems - including the options for working with wind farm energy developers conb ining new sea defences with sites for wind turbines that can part-fund the cost of sea defences.

5  That the Environment Agency look to revisit the idea of a Yare Barrier at the harbour's mouth in Great Yarmouth to protect the Broads and river system in a 'flood situation'.
