Sunset Club

The Sunset Club is a long standing social club for members over sixty years of age. It meets on the third Thursday of every month at 2pm in the Village Hall, Cranworth.  There are currently around 17 members who attend regularly, in addition to a range of guests and visitors who pop in or accompany the group on their outings.

History

The Club was inaugurated on the 8th November 1957 and at the first official meeting on 5 December '57,  guests were promised ‘tea at 6d, games and a sing-song'. Dr D.O.Dickie was elected as the first President and Mrs S. G Eaglington, Chairperson.

Activities

The current group of members most enjoy ‘sitting and having a mardle'.  Their meetings always begin with  games: dominoes and whist are particular favourites. This is followed by a substantial tea of sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones and cakes prepared by the committee  members.  A raffle is held as well as a ‘mini-auction' of donated items. This always becomes an entertaining interlude with much friendly banter and repartee between the ‘Auctioneer' and the group.

Chairperson

The current Chair is Mrs June Bush who took up her position thirty seven  years ago when she was still resident in Southburgh at Pear Tree Farm. Her husband, Frank was a well respected Norfolk farrier and the family business is continued by her son-in-law John Blake and eldest Grandson, with a younger Grandson hoping to begin his apprenticeship soon. June trained as a hairdresser and beautician, working in the UK and abroad before settling in Norfolk with her husband and raising their three children on their smallholding. Both she and Frank were keen riders and June still has their old driving pony, Sam, enjoying his retirement. June fondly recalls their self-sufficiency in Southburgh, producing their own milk, butter and meat.         She has meticulously kept all the handwritten minutes of the Sunset Club dating back to 1957. They provide a wonderful resource for those with an interest in local history.

Funds

There are no subscription charges but everyone contributes £1 for  afternoon tea. Funds raised from the raffle and auction pay for the annual outing to Gorleston, annual dinner or lunch at a restaurant, Christmas Meal and other treats. Last Christmas, the group enjoyed a fish and chip lunch delivered to the hall in place of a traditional turkey roast.

Interested?

New members and visitors are assured of a warm welcome at the Club.  Some members live locally but others travel from surrounding villages. If you are interested or know of someone who might like to visit, please contact Mrs June Bush for information on 01953   498613
