Broadband Service in rural Norfolk

Added 31st May. 2009

The Eastern Daily Press on Friday 29th May ran a 2-page spread on poor broadband service in rural Norfolk, which included a short quote from an interview with your webmaster:

" Paddy Apling, 84, a retired scientist from Wood Rising, near
Dereham, uses the internet for historical and scientific research, and
is also setting up a community website for the parish council.
He said his broadband had got slower and slower since last year,
and now he cannot play music or video, and it is difficult to read the
electronic edition of the EDP.
"A series of complaints, starting in late February, have resulted in
various attempts by BT to produce speed improvements which have
never been achieved.
"I am almost at my wits' end in frustration, trying to get them to
restore service at least to the level they were providing in 2008."

 Comment:

To this I would add the comment, that government policy is apparently that all should have broadband service at a speed of 2 Mpbs.

Last year the speed BT provided me was of the order of 1 Mpbs, but this year (after finding NO service was available after I returned from a stay in Canada) service was restored, initially at around 1 Mpbs, but soon deteriorated to its present speed of 135 Kpb, which makes using the full facilities of the web difficult, and some impossible.

I would welcome contact with others in the parish with speed problems.
